This project looks at two historically related and vastly different sites in San Francisco, the Mabuhay Gardens Punk Rock Palace (known as the “FabMab”) on Broadway St. in North Beach and its previous incarnation as the Mabuhay restaurant on Kearny St. Researched from interviews and archival material, this piece focuses on the spectral qualities, social lives, and the politicized terrain of both locales. An accompanying audio track describes the everyday possibilities and parallels that occured on both places, recollected by one of the few people to frequent both: Richard Likong, music photographer now filmmaker, and half-brother of Kirk Hammett from Metallica.
